Popular Nigerian skit maker and singer Carter Efe has opened up about why he distanced himself from music, describing the industry as “devilish” and emotionally draining.

Speaking during an interview with BBC News, the entertainer revealed that his experience in the music business left him disappointed, especially after discovering how little he would allegedly earn from his songs despite their popularity.

According to Carter Efe, he initially believed music was simple and fun, thinking that once an artist released a hit song, success and enjoyment would naturally follow.

However, he said reality hit him hard after receiving documents related to music royalties and earnings. “I ran away from music because the industry is very devilish,” he said during the interview. “I thought once you drop a song, you can just go outside and dance to it.”

The comedian further claimed that after releasing music, he received what he described as a “full letter” explaining the sharing structure of revenue from his songs.

He expressed shock upon learning that he would reportedly receive less than 10 percent from the proceeds generated by his own music.

“Spotify sent me a full letter saying I wouldn’t even be getting 10% from my song,” he added while expressing frustration over the business side of the entertainment industry.

Carter Efe’s comments have since sparked reactions online, with many fans and social media users debating the realities of music contracts, streaming royalties, and the challenges upcoming artists face in the Nigerian music industry.

The skit maker, who gained massive popularity through comedy content and later ventured into music, appeared emotional while reflecting on his experience, suggesting that the pressure and financial structure in the industry pushed him away from pursuing music full-time.
