Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi has taken a swipe at an opponent seeking to contest the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat, arguing that political office, particularly the Senate, should not be treated as a destination for wealthy businessmen without a record of public service.

Speaking during a political gathering in Ebonyi State, Nwebonyi questioned the qualifications of his rival, whom he described as a businessman benefiting from government patronage.

According to the senator, occupying a seat in the National Assembly requires experience, intellectual capacity, and a track record of achievement beyond commercial success.

He maintained that the Senate is reserved for individuals who have distinguished themselves in various professions and contributed meaningfully to society.

Using himself as an example, Nwebonyi said he had already established a successful career in the private sector before venturing into politics.

The lawmaker stressed that politics should not be viewed as a means of personal enrichment, insisting that public service often demands significant personal sacrifice.

He claimed that his responsibilities as a senator have required him to spend more resources than he receives in office.

Nwebonyi further declared that he sees no serious political challenge to his position in Ebonyi State, expressing confidence in his popularity and political standing ahead of future elections.

Beyond the criticism of his opponent, the senator used the opportunity to praise ongoing infrastructure projects under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, citing road developments and other interventions that he said are improving the lives of citizens across the region.

He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the party as the dominant political force in Ebonyi State.

According to him, the APC remains firmly rooted in the state and is well-positioned to secure victories in future elections.

Addressing internal political issues, Nwebonyi stated that divisions that once existed among political blocs in Ebonyi have largely been resolved.

He pledged support for Governor Francis Nwifuru, whom he described as the unifying leader of the state.

The senator urged party members and stakeholders to move beyond local rivalries and embrace a broader vision focused on development and collective progress.

He warned against attempts by external forces to create divisions within the state’s political structure, insisting that Ebonyi politicians are now more united than ever.

He concluded by calling on residents and party supporters to work together in pursuit of sustainable growth and political stability, saying the state has entered a new era of cooperation and shared purpose, see more…
