A new report circulating in scientific and media discussions has suggested that Nigerians may possess a unique genetic variation linked to higher levels of happiness and emotional resilience.
According to the findings, the variation affects the production of a naturally occurring chemical in the body known as anandamide—often referred to as the “bliss molecule.”
Researchers say this compound plays a role in regulating mood, memory, and emotional responses, potentially reducing the risk of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The report highlights a global comparison in which countries with a higher prevalence of this gene variation tend to report greater levels of happiness among their populations.
Nigeria reportedly stands out as a leading example, with a significantly larger proportion of its population carrying the genetic trait. In one comparison, Nigerians were said to be nearly twice as likely as people in the United Kingdom to possess the variation.
Scientists explain that the gene is involved in producing the body’s natural equivalent of compounds found in cannabis, which are known to influence mood and stress levels.
A graphical analysis accompanying the report showed a clear pattern: countries with lower levels of the gene variation recorded lower happiness scores, while those with higher levels—such as Nigeria—ranked significantly higher in reported well-being.
However, experts caution that happiness is influenced by a complex mix of factors beyond genetics, including culture, environment, economic conditions, and social connections.
While the findings offer an intriguing perspective on biological influences, they do not fully explain national or individual happiness levels.
The report has sparked conversation online, with many Nigerians reacting humorously and proudly to the suggestion that their resilience and upbeat outlook might have a scientific basis.
Further research is expected to explore the relationship between genetics and emotional well-being, as scientists seek to better understand how biology interacts with life experiences to shape human happiness.
