Tensions between Italy and Israel have deepened following the interception of an international aid flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea, prompting a swift diplomatic response from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
According to reports, Israeli naval forces seized control of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” approximately 150 nautical miles off the coast of Crete, an area considered international waters.
The flotilla, made up of 22 boats carrying about 175 activists from multiple countries, was reportedly en route on a humanitarian mission.
Among those detained were at least 24 Italian citizens, a development that triggered immediate concern in Rome.
In response, Meloni activated Italy’s crisis response unit to closely monitor the situation and coordinate efforts aimed at securing the release of its nationals.
The Italian leader strongly condemned the interception, describing it as unlawful and a violation of international maritime norms.
She called on Israeli authorities to release all detained individuals without delay, emphasizing the need to respect international law and human rights.
This latest incident marks a significant escalation in the already strained relations between Italy and Israel. Just two weeks prior, Meloni announced the suspension of a long-standing defense cooperation agreement between both nations, effectively halting over two decades of military collaboration.
Diplomatic observers say the flotilla seizure could further widen the rift between the two countries, with potential implications for broader European-Israeli relations.
As of now, Israeli authorities have not issued a detailed public response regarding the detentions or Italy’s demands. The situation remains fluid as international attention grows over the legality of the operation and the fate of those still in custody.
