Abuja, Nigeria — A kidnapped National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member identified as Abba has regained his freedom following a series of tense negotiations and ransom payments totaling ₦3.5 million.
Details of the release were shared by D English Alhaji, who outlined the complex and shifting demands made by the abductors before the victim was eventually freed.
According to the account, the kidnappers initially demanded approximately ₦10 million alongside three motorcycles. In response, negotiators reportedly delivered ₦10 million and two motorcycles, with arrangements underway to provide the third motorcycle as requested.
However, the situation evolved as the abductors altered their terms, requesting that the outstanding motorcycle be converted into cash.
The demand was subsequently reduced in stages—first to ₦4 million, and later to ₦3.5 million—after prolonged discussions.
Funds for the ransom were reportedly raised through public contributions, with Nigerians rallying to generate about ₦2.5 million initially before completing the remaining balance required for Abba’s release.
A driver tasked with delivering the ransom was said to have charged ₦150,000 for the high-risk journey to the location specified by the kidnappers.
Following confirmation and counting of the payment, Abba was released to safety. Despite the successful rescue, concerns remain for another victim, Maryam, who is still being held captive.
Reports indicate that her abductors are demanding one motorcycle and an additional ₦1 million to secure her freedom.
The incident highlights the persistent threat of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria and highlights the growing reliance on community-driven fundraising efforts to secure the release of victims, as authorities continue to grapple with the challenge of curbing such crimes.
